Preferences Week #4

1. What is their favorite season? Do you know why?
2. Tell about any of their travels or vacations you know of?
3. What was their favorite holiday? How did they celebrate?
4. Did they know any foreign languages, which ones? Why did they learn it?
5. Describe a favorite dress/ outfit, etc.

"1. I'm not 100% sure but I know Grandma enjoyed spring. Whether it was her favorite or not is another story. I remember Grandma telling me how wonderful spring was with the new flowers and the rain.
2. I know they wanted to go to Australia to see Bev and the girls but I'm not sure they ever made it. Vacationing was something they just didn't do a whole lot of. I do remember camping in the mountains with them once. I believe we went to Mirror lake in the Uintah's. Grandma loved the lily pads on the lake.
3. I would say they loved all holidays because they enjoyed having their family around them. But I think Christmas was probably the favorite. They didn't have a lot of money and spoiled us with love instead. I loved going to grandma's and "performing" the nativity every Christmas and also enjoyed singing Christmas songs. I know grandma and grandpa enjoyed watching their grandchildren perform for them too.
4. Grandma knew "Canadian" (Ay!) J/K I'm at a loss on this one so I'm just being funny.
5. Grandpa's outfit was definitely his gray or blue work overalls. He was so cute! I can picture him now. He also had lot's of flannel shirts that he wore with the overalls. Grandma's outfit was definitely the brightly colored mu mu's (spelling?) She had quite the collection of them."
-Kori

"Gma and Gpa went to Hawaii with our family in about 1978. I can't remember much about it but Dave might. As for "fashion" I agree with Kori, Gpa seemed to prefer overalls (I think they were blue/white mini-striped) and Gma's mu-mus. She did seem to have many. I think the only other dress I remember her wearing was like a light pink or dusty rose color polyester dress with pleats I think--what do you guys remember?"
-Noelle

"As far as the vacation to Hawaii... we went to what is now the Turtle Bay Hilton on the north shore of Oahu. They didn't come out much... but did come down and wade in the ocean with us.

foreign languages- none that I know of. But ask one of their kids because grandpa was born in Bern ID where the Kunz's settled after imigrating fm Switzerland and may have known some German and grandma may have grown up around french... But I can't remember either of them speaking anything but English

I remember thanksgiving and christmas at grandpa and grandma's with all the aunts and uncles and cousins until I was about 11 or 12."
-Dave

"I don't know about favorite seasons, but I remember Grandpa complaining about the time change to Daylight Savings Time and then changing back again in the fall. He told me that the farmers had nothing to do with that nonsense, it just messed up milking time. Thanks for invoking these trivial memories Marlies, it is amazing what random things pop into one's mind once provoked. I'm pretty sure Grandma's favorite dress was any style of a Moo-Moo. They were comfortable for her and fit her. I got one when we were in Hawaii and I have to admit, it is very comfy to wear, especially with flip flops, which she also wore. "
-Sandra

"I don't recall a favorite outfit other than the ones already mentioned, but one thought that came to mind was that grandma often wore a single chain necklace with a pendent around her neck. I also recall her wind song perfume. I always think of her when I smell it."
-Marlies

"I don't have an answer to any of these except that they didn't know any foreign languages unless you call mother's pig latin a language. "
-Marvin

Their Preferences #3

1. Do you know of any favorite poems they had?
2. What was their favorite food and how did they prepare it? Or what was your favorite food that they made?
3. What kind of games did they enjoy playing?
4. Did they have a favorite painting or artist?
5. What was their favorite dessert?

"I remember Grandma loved the poem "Master's Hand"."
-Dave

"My mom had memorized and quoted so many poems it is hard to know what her favorite might have been. I know she really liked the poem, “The Ancient Mariner”, plus “Invictus”. I only remember the last few lines of Invictus,
It matters not how straight the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll.
I am the Master of my fate,
I am the Captain of my soul.

They are both beautiful thought provoking poems. You’ll all have to look them up. I know the “Ancient Mariner” is a really long one and as you read it remember that your grandmother had it memorized.

When I was chewing gum her favorite poem was:
A girl chewing gum and a cud chewing cow,
They seem quite the same but different somehow?
I know, it’s the intelligent look on the face of the cow."
-Eileen

"Kori helped me remember another poem/verse mom loved to quote:
Patience is a virtue, catch it if you can.
It’s seldom found in woman, and never found in man!"
-Eileen

"Word’s of wisdom from my dad:

If you put it together, it goes together.

It’s better to keep your mouth shut and let someone think you are a fool, than to open it and remove all doubt.

If you don’t have anything good to say about some, don’t say anything at all."
-Eileen

"Mom was always quoting poems but I have no idea what her favorite may have been. I neverr heard dad recite a poem or do I have any idea if he had one.

Dad liked meat and potatos and hated rice. He liked liver and onions and creamed corn and canned peas in a white sauce, probably because he had lost so many teeth. Bread and milk was a treat for dad. Mother like pop corn and mince meat pie and raisen pie. She liked fruit nut cake or what ever the cake is with the disgusting tasteless fruit in it. Mom seemed to like sweets and dad didn't. He would take the icing off from cake. I learned to like liver and onions and have always liked meat and potatoes. I hated creamed corn and peas in white sauce. I did like mom's kidney beans and ham.

I don't recall playing a lot of games as a family. Mom taught us "kick the can" and "ante I over". We taught our selves to ride the calves and got in a lot of trouble for it.

I don't know that either of them had a favorite artist but mother treasured the painting she had of "Old Chief Mountain". She always said it was in Canada but when I went up there I found out it is actually in the U.S."
-Marvin

"1. Grandma loved poetry in general but I agree with Dave that "Master's Hand" and "Footprints" were some favorites.
2. I remember grandma and grandpa being "meat and potatoes" fans. I remember running to the old cellar in the ground in the back yard to get potatoes for grandma. My favorite thing grandma made would have to be the homeade bread. I loved eating a piece of it right out of the oven with lot's of melted butter on top.Grandma was very good at storing food and one of the items I got when things were being divided up was cans and cans of Nacho Cheese Campbell's soup. It wasn't really soup just Nacho Cheese. I got many can's of this and greatly appreciated it because at the time I was a starving college student. I still think of grandma to this day whenever I see nacho cheese.
3. Grandma was very competitive and grandpa would do whatever grandma did. I played Yahtzee a lot with them when I was younger and noticed several times grandpa would cheat to let grandma win. I used to think, now that is love. What a sweet grandpa we have.
4. I'm not sure on this one.
5. I'm not sure it was a favorite but we had cake and ice cream many times while at their house. I don't remember grandpa eating much as far as dessert because of his sugar intolerence. I know he wasn't diabetic but he had issues with sugar. I also remember getting Nilla Wafers when visiting great Grandma and Grandpa Kunz."

Their Preferences #2

1. Where was their favorite place to shop?
2. What was their favorite time of day?
3. Were they “night owls” or “early birds”? Describe some of these habits and routines.
4. Do you recall a favorite pair of shoes they owned? Describe them.
5. Did they have a favorite author? Who? Why? Tell about favorite books. What did books mean to them?

"They were definitely early birds, especially grandpa!"
-Dave

"1. (Wilma) JC Penney's
2. No Idea
3. (Ivan) early Bird (Wilma) Night Owl.
4. nope
5. (Wilma) Yes - Who? Zane Gray"
-Richard

"1. Well I don’t ever remember going shopping with them, but my dad told me that Grandma always went shopping for produce at Cy’s Market on 7th East in Sandy.
3. Grandpa was a hard worker so I imagine that he was one to hop out of bed and get to work, but grandma liked to talk and I know when we lived in Oregon my mom used to say Grandma would call her late because everyone else in Utah had gone to bed and grandma knew that mom was still up and my dad was at work.
5. I don’t know what they read, but I do remember that I loved to listen to the book on tape when I went to their house."
-Marlies

"1. I can't remember the name of the place but there was a fresh produce market on 700 E that grandma always took us to. I liked going with her because she always let us have some of what she purchased.
2&3. I agree with Dave they were both early birds. So morning would probably be one of their favorite times of day. It makes me wonder where I came from because I am a "night owl". I also know they enjoyed sitting on their front porch in the evenings and watching the cars go by.
4. Grandma loved slippers and anything slip on. I know she really loved the great Australian slippers that Bev would get us. I loved them too. You can beat a great pair of fur lined Australian slippers. Grandpa would have had his work boots. They looked like they were as old as he was and I used to wonder what they would say if they could talk.
5. I'm sure they had a favorite author I just don't know who it would be. I know they both enjoyed the scriptures. Grandma loved writing and poetry and has even been published. Grandma loved books from the classics to new novels. I know someone in the family got her into "the Work and the Glory" books and I remember buying some for her to add to her collection for birthday and mother's day gifts."
-Kori

"Trust me grandma was an early bird. Every Saturday morning she would call to check in on us. Luckily my mom woke up and took the phone call because I wouldn't get out of bed until 10 or 11 am."
-Kori

"I remember a trip or two to Cy's Market. I don't, however, remember if it was with Dad or Grandma! I remember them getting up early to go work at the temple when we stayed with them while mom and dad went on one of their little excursions with the Holdaway family."
-Cheryl

"1. Dad didn't shop as I recall. Mom probably Sprouse Reitz would be number 1 on her list. I think mom would have loved to shop more.
2. & 3. I don't know that either had a favorite time of day. Dad was an early riser and Mom was more of a night owl as I recall.
4. Except for Sunday dad either wore an old pair of work shoes or his rubber boots he used for irrigating. And he would wear the shoes until they practically fell off and the boots until they leaked bad enough that he was tired of them. Mom would be a little more frivolous. She may have had a couple or even three pair of shoes for Sunday. But during the week I think she preferred flip flops.
5. Dad read very little except the scriptures. Mother read anything she could get her hands on. She seemed to love poetry to read or to write. I have no idea if she had a favorite author.

They were not frivolous people. They had to work hard to get by their entire lives. Going to movies or restaurants or staying in hotels were a rarity for them. What they had they used until it couldn't be used anymore and then they found another use for it. For most of their life if they could make something they would do so instead of buying it."
-Marvin

"You didn't remember that Mom's favorite author was Zane Grey? She only bought every book he published as well as many others. There were no "lending libraries" where Mom grew up and books were a highly desired treasure for all of the Morgan/Clara Gibson family. Books were not only Mom's hobby but probably her only real extravagance.
The only people I know who lived a more simple life than Mom & Dad were our grandparents, Ezra and Vilda Kunz. Like Grandma & Grandpa Kunz, whatever amount of money they had above their basic fixed expenses (household-utilities, upkeep; food & clothing) generally went into helping other people. Ultimately, their effort to have extra food, clothing and bedding put away for hard times did help all of our families somewhat after they died (I still have a ten year supply of beans and rice). However much of the food had to be disposed of because it was too old. But I believe they will be judged in heaven for their obedience to Church instruction concerning being self-sufficient and the genuine intent of their hearts to help others."
-Jeanette

"I was reading the blog yesterday and the comments on whether mom and dad were morning and night people caught my attention. Dad certainly was a morning person, but mother I think for some periods of her life masqueraded as a morning person; but like her mother, was indeed a night owl and there was many a night that she would sit up reading in her chair in the living room. Since my bedroom was next to the living room I can remember the late nights. She would often say she was waiting up for us kids, but I think it was her excuse to be able to stay up and satisfy her night owl tendencies.

Some of you had commented you wondered where your night owl tendency came from so I thought I should fill in a little here. Grandma Clara is where it would come from. She even belonged to the "Night Owls Club."It was a radio station where people could call in and talk through the wee hours of the night. She would sit and listen to all the conversations late into the night. I don't know if she ever called in herself, but she would sit and listen by the hour. I know when she lived in Uncle Herb's little house next door, you would always see the table lamp on by her chair late into the night. So rest assured it is in the genes.

I know I am certainly a night owl having to masquerade as a morning dove. The hardest thing for me to do in the evening is get to bed at a decent time, because I have to get up before 5 AM. I just come alive at bedtime and have a surge of energy that many times won't let me get to sleep even if I do make it to bed early. Which like this morning makes it hard when the alarm goes off, because the masquerading morning dove, would rather stay in bed."

Their Preferences #1

1. Which sports did grandma and/or grandpa enjoy as a spectator? Which sports did they participate in? Tell of a memory you have with them and sports.
2. What kind of things do you remember them collecting?
3. What kind of music did they like? Share a memory of them with music.
4. What things did they enjoy doing? What did you enjoy doing with them?
5. What was their favorite restaurant? Why did they like to go there?

"1. sports - I don't think Dad had a favorite sport. When he was growing up he worked and I don't think he had the opportunity to play any sports. Both Dad and Mother would come and watch the softball and basketball games we boys played in. That is until Mother started having heart problems and the excitement was to much for her. Then only Dad would come. Mother liked to watch professional wrestling, I could never figure out why. I think she had a thing for a wrestler by the name of Yvonne Ouimette.
2. Collecting - The main thing I remember them collecting was kids. Well that and bottles of old fruit and vegetables that we had to get rid of after they died.Of course you might say Dad was sort of a collector. He saved every nut and bolt and usable parts that were laying around in case the would be of use. And at one time or another they generally were.Mother loved to read and had a collection of books she had read.
3. Music - Other than church hymns I don't know of any type for Dad. I think Mother liked classical as well as church hymns. I know she hated the 50's and 60's rock.
4. Enjoy doing??? - I think for Dad it must have been work. We went on very few vacations and they were generally the Kunz Reunion. When Dad had to haul scrap copper to Wallace Idaho he would take a couple of us kids with him. That was one high light for me.I think Mom's enjoyment was talking to someone on the phone. I think there were probably a lot of things she would have liked to do but circumstance wouldn't permit.
5. Restaurant - Up until they had the wedding breakfast at Harman's Kentucky Fried Chicken on 39th South and State I don't think I was ever in a restaurant with Dad and Mother both. On our trips to Wallace Idaho the 4 Bee's Cafe, or was it 3 B's, anyway it was a high light of the trip." -Uncle Marv

"I remember Grandma collected nick-nacks. She had tons of little glass figurines of animals and such. The reason I remember this is because sometimes when we would spend the day there, we had to help with the housework and I hated dusting all her little shelves of nick-nacks. I think her favorite store was Rexall. It was located where the dollar store is now over at the Sandy Mall. She was always getting stuff there. If it was a good deal, she would buy 3 or 4, not that she needed them, but they were such a good price so why not stock up. "
"I just remembered that they used to like to go to McDonalds on occasion. The occasion would be after church on Sunday. I guess Grandma figured that it was her day of rest from cooking."
-Sandra

"Grandma and Grandpa Kunz, what can i say my sister and probably have the lest memories of everybody as we were so far away and visiting was really hard, but this is what i remember (although i don't think they will fit in too well with the list above).ok i remember grandpa and his raspberry patch out the back (i think it was raspberry), making raspberry ice cream in the ice churner (hard work for some ice cream), and irrigating the yard, sooo cold but sooo much fun in summer :)i remember grandma and her owls and thimbles all over the house (i was actually collecting thimbles for her on my central australia camp when she died) i know have them in my display cupboard and tell my kids why i have them when they ask about them.I also remember grandma always having a bowl of peanut M&M's in the front room that my sister and i were always emptying when mum wasn't watching and grandma was always filling so we wouldn't get caught out. (It used to drive mum mad, she would tell us to stop and grandma would say keep going. we would always listen to grandma it was much more fun :) )I suppose being only 12 the last time i saw them i am probably more lolly remembering than most other things (lollies are important at 12), although i suppose these are also the things that stick with you through your life.as i think of more I will add but this is a starting point"
-Amelia from down under

"1. Okay so this is a hard one for me. All I remember is that they were very supportive and would come to softball games, dance recitals and piano recitals that I had.
2. Grandma collected thimbles, spoons, books, and anything "owl" related. Grandpa collected anything mechanical and coins. Grandma also had a great "Troll" doll collection that I loved to play with as a child. They stood on a great shelf that grandpa had built for her.
3. I mostly remember Christmas songs, Tabernacle Choir songs, and church music.
4. Grandpa liked to "tinker" and fix things. Whatever he got his hands on he could fix. It was great to see his mind work through a problem and fix it right before your very eyes. Grandma enjoyed sitting in her padded rocking chair and talking on the phone. I loved Sunday night visits to their house and playing and talking with Aunts, Uncles, and cousins. I also loved a good competitive game of Yahtzee with them. Grandma always wanted to win and Grandpa would always let everyone win but him. I'm also with Amelia and loved playing in the canal water grandpa used to flood the yard to water it. Grandma would sit on a chair on the porch and Grandpa would stand near the opening of the ditch leaning on his shovel. I used to think they were both thinking they had the funniest grandkids ever.
5. I don't remember them eating out much. Grandma was always cooking. I do remember that they had to have a slice of bread with butter for every meal."
-Kori

"Thank heavens for Kori. I wouldn't have remembered those things, but now I do. The owls, the trolls and she had some black velvet pillows with maps or pics of Australia. She had a few great pictures--scenes from Canada- in her bathroom-one of a royal garden with mountains in the back I think--I loved that pic. Gma also collected magnets on her fridge--again from Australia and other places-and one with the face of a little boy who looked like Adam that said--"I know I'm somebody 'cause God don't make no junk". I have no recollection of them having any inclination for sports or restaurants. I remember Gpa always tinkering and his fingers always having traces of grease in them. Great hands. Gma also seemed to have a collection of moo-moos(sp?) I never saw her in pants."
-Noelle

"2. Grandma collected those little plastic Indians with all the different expressions. Her favorite thing to collect seemed to be owls. Maybe it was because she was such a night owl. I don’t know. 3. I remember that Grandpa Kunz loved the primary songs near the end of his life and I was honored to be asked to play a few at his funeral.
4. Grandpa seemed to enjoy hard work. He was always working and if he was sitting still he was sleeping. Grandma was quite the talker. She never seemed to run out of things to talk about as I recall."
–Marlies

"I love the idea, thanks for thinking of it. Trevor remembers playing with a red tractor at their house (which is pretty good because he was only 2 1/2 years old when they passed away). Jeff said that he remembers going over to Grandma and Grandpa's house after they irrigated and collecting worms and selling them with Grandma."
-Angie

"Grandpa and Grandma Kunz would watch us play sports, but didn't participate much

As far as a restaurant. I remember getting KFC when we would go visit them and they hadn't eaten. It wasn't often but it was one of the things that I remember."
-Yvonne
